$32,500. About as reasonably priced as I've seen a 993 recently. I'd say this is right around market.

Indeed, although for some reason this is what popped into my head when I read your reply:

I feel like I'm perpetually behind the curve on 911s. While I was in school, 993s were priced such that I'd be able to afford one soon after I got out. Now that I'm out of school and of the means to purchase one at that price, they've risen to a point where I could buy but just don't feel comfortable spending. And I get the distinct feeling that by the time I feel comfortable spending $30-40k on one, they'll all be $50k+ cars.

Just can't win.

Why couldn't it be three months from now! (when I have space and could possibly afford this)

Here's how buying a 993 goes:

1. See price.

2. Can't afford it now, but can afford it in due time.

3. Due time rolls around.

4. Prices have risen again, can't afford right now, but can afford in due time.

5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 in perpetuity.

You're right on point. It's the vicious cycle of used car prices.

I flipped through his Flickr and it looks like it has had very professional detailing and maintenance, so it probably has the provenance to accompany the ad.

I had a grueling decision to make recently. The 3 year lease on my 2010 997 C2 was up. The car had about 48000 miles on it and the buyout was $45K.

I knew I could get a nice 993 like this one that you found for the same price or less. And I knew that 993 prices were going up.

I went ahead and bought my car because it has been bulletproof and I knew the history. It seemed like a waste to let it go when it had treated me so well.

While I knew the 997 was more modern and usable as a DD than the 993 I still don't know if I made the right choice. There are a ton of 997s out there. There are not as many clean 993s out there. Porsche probably sold less 993s total and many have been abused, wrecked, etc. And having the last of the air cooled 911s would be awesome.

Hopefully the 993 prices won't skyrocket and make me feel like I really messed up. If the appreciation is slow enough then more good people on Oppo can buy them.

This is just my guess - the 993 C2 prices will keep going up but the appreciation won't get super nuts like with some cars. But the C2S and Turbo/Turbo S prices will go up faster. The more rare 993s will probably keep appreciating astronomically.

The rarer 993s (Turbos, etc.) are already seeing goofy prices.

This was a $25k car a year or so ago, from what I remember of looking at the market. I think the real issue with C2s is that it seems like there aren't that many around: tons of C4s and then a regular quantity of C4s, but a good C2 is hard to find for some weird reason, despite the fact that they should be the most plentiful examples.

What's the saying about a rising tide floats all boats?

Unless the market completely bottoms out, you'll always be behind the curve. The best advice I got was to find/buy the one that needs the least amount of work. I had a budget in mind and had to go over it by a few grand before I hit pay dirt.

Wow this same car would have been $25K? That's nuts for one year!!

You're right there were too many C4 models made. And too many tip tronic

That may be a touch on the low side, but a 993 C2 in good shape with a stick and reasonable mileage was definitely a sub-$30k proposition a year ago, and I'd say this example now represents what a good deal looks like. It's been a little nuts.

And agreed, way too many tiptronics.

I never should have got my 997. Imagine how cheap a low mileage 993 C2 would have been 3 years ago!

There are way too many 993 tip tronic cabriolets. Worst combo...

The kicker is that a 993 owner is probably going to spend a some amount of the appreciation keeping it in decent condition, so the gains aren't as untoward as they look, but there have definitely been deals to have.

Very NP, on the surface of it, it appears to be all you could want in a 993.

I'd still try to bid him below $30, though.

True but still better to have the appreciation pay for the maintenance than pay to maintain a depreciating car.

And a 993 C2 wouldn't be too bad for those that do their own wrenching. My old man has an 82 911 SC that he maintains himself. Once he got past the steep learning curve he was good. He now spends little time and money maintaining it. At first it took him a lot of time to diagnose issues but now he knows the flat 6 like the back of his hand.

And there are some really good indie shops that charge reasonable labor rates. At least for now there are. A lot of them are going out of business :(
